The African Women in Mathematics Association (AWMA) is pleased to commemorate the International Day for Women in Mathematics 2026 with a special virtual event themed:
“AWMA: Honoring Our History, Advancing Our Legacy, Shaping Our Future.”
This event provides an opportunity to reflect on the evolution of AWMA—from its conceptualization in 2013 to its expansion across more than 30 African countries—while also setting a forward-looking agenda for strengthening the participation and leadership of women in the mathematical sciences across the continent.
The program will feature a historical reflection on the growth and impact of AWMA, keynote addresses on strengthening the mathematical pipeline for women in Africa and on global collaboration and the role of networks in advancing women in mathematics, as well as a panel discussion with representatives from across the African continent. The panel will explore regional experiences, shared challenges, and collective strategies for advancing women in mathematics.
Discussion themes will include institutional and structural challenges for women mathematicians, mentorship and leadership development, strengthening research collaboration across African regions, the role of the African diaspora in supporting mathematical development, strategies for sustaining growth, and access to research funding and grants.
As part of this event, AWMA will also launch its project titled “African Women in Mathematics: Our History, Advancing and Shaping Our Future,” aimed at documenting achievements, preserving history, and inspiring future generations.
